A Berliet motor mystery. ( upd. the only Berliet 2,5 litre?)

Jim Fairchild is "Mr. Berliet Australia". He owns no less than five Berliet cars. He is into collecting and restoring the products of Lyon for many decades. And from own experience we know he can cough up Berliet parts that nobody else thinks still are available in this universe. There are few secrets  to the marque Berliet, or Jim knows the answer. Or he knows the people who know the answer. Still there is one issue that is bothering him for ages now. It's the engine of his VR2 tourer depicted here. To open the hood please press this little latch. The engine is unknown to Jim. The engine is unknown to any French car expert Jim ever asked. The engien is a mystery even to the Fondation Berliet! Still Mr. Fairchild is convinced this engine came with the car when delivered new. So the problem is clear. Can you put a name on the powerunit of his VR2?  (photos Rick Nicolaas)

I have the original documentation that dad received from Pritchard Motors when he bought it If I can find the new owner I would like to give it too him the original Reg no. is 24745 I was told that you know most of the Berliet history in Aust so you may know who has this vehicle now
Thanks Jim Regards Tony.

Sorry if I confused you! There is no doubt that the engine is made by Berliet.
They released this engine, 80 x 130 and a larger one, 95 x 140, in 1924. My question really is : Does anyone know of another Berliet with this engine today. The Fondation Berliet do not know of another.

I believe this could be a Berliet engine. The company had a large range of varying designs through the twenties.
Consider this 1924 2.5 litre chassis with dynostarter. Only difference I can spot is the side-draught as opposed to the up-draught carburettor.

I agree with David, it is very similar at first glance, but for starters, the plugs and inlet manifold are on the wrong side, so not a Delage DI series.

Most French 4 cylinder OHV engines of the 20's bear some passing similarities in appearance. In this instance basic differences between the engine in question and the Delage DI is that intake and exhaust are on opposite sides. " To paraphrase someone of the past unknown to me, " A simple idea, and god is in the detail".
