A mysterious vehicle with a large tank on the rear
A message came in from Steve Adcock. Hello! I am trying to identify this old car. I think it says "Laffay" on the grille and I believe it is a fire tender of some sort - large water tank on the rear. The photo was taken by a friend his father while stationed in France in the '50s. Any help is greatly appreciated!
It is, without a doubt, an imposing vehicle with some interesting features. We also noticed a small sign hanging in front of the radiator saying pas d'EAU (no water)...
Can anyone tell us more about the vehicle in this picture?

It would seem they made it down to Australia too! When researching my recently published book "Queensland's Motoring Dawn', I came across this very low resolution photo of the exact same vehicle, but until now had no idea what it was. 'My' photo was taken in Brisbane, in 1913.

The automobile had an article on a 1910 or so Renault road sweeper long time ago. I also remember the report on a pre WWI Lafly sweeper, which had a wooden driver cabin

Its an balayeuse automobile´, the brush is missing. The water tank was used to reduce the development of dust

These were called balladeuse ( sweeper) , I think mainly used in Paris.
however the one on the picture seems to have a Geneva license plate ?
I think these were used till maybe even after WW2 ?
although the design was much earlier ( these had all solid tires)

this seems to be a Laffly, product of a french ("pas d'eau") carmaker.

I think the grille script probably says Laffly. From the cylindrical brush fitted underneath, this would appear to be one of their street sweepers and the water tank would have been used to keep the dust down. Laffly were a French manufacturer of road sweepers and other vehicles

A water sprayer, used to spray water on dusty roads....... actually quite common in France where I suspect the photo was taken.... and used right through to and perhaps even after WW11.....
