A mystery to drive away

How many of us car nuts have enjoyed the many movies of the Frazer Nashes, GN-specials and other chain driven cars? When we received this photo from Peter Skofic, this was the first thing that came to our mind. A chain driven cyclecar. We would love to drive with this car over the banks of the Montlhery circuit. But what car is it?

The Bosnian oldtimer club "Oldtimer 1912" (1912 indicates the year of the foundation of the Bosnian automobile association) have commented the photo saying that this is a Bugatti. Spotted in Rogatica (i.e. a town in the southeastern region of Bosnia) in 1939. And that the young man with the characteristic Bosnian/Turkish "fes" on his head, sitting behind the driving wheel is Alija Aksamija. It is known that Alija became later, after the end of WW2, a famous photographer.

We don't think this car is a Bugatti but probably something else. Is there someone else that knows exactly what it is?

I want to say that if it was Peter Skofic [and I did say if] that has 'played around' with this image then he should hang his head in shame. Motor Racing History is most important and not be put in the 'fake news' area. As a student of motoring history I am very upset.

A typo crept into my earlier response. It should have read: The car is indisputably a DFP (Doriot, Flandrin & Parant) from about 1913.

The car is indisputably a DFP (Doriot, Flandrin & Parant) from about 1930. There is a well-known picture of W O Bentley in an identical car taken about 1913. Indeed, at risk of upsetting someone, it is pretty obvious that someone has taken the Bentley photograph, reversed the image, and photoshopped it into a new background and changed the driver. The gear levers, the wheel shadows, the curious spurs on the dumb irons - everything is here in reverse. Bentley, incidentally, achieved great results with his DFP - having fitted his own aluminium pistons instead of the original cast-iron ones.

It could well be a DFP.

Some strange questions are arising! If you go to http://alexreid.info/classic-story-bentley.asp to compare the picture of WO Bentley in his DFP, we see the negative has been reversed. The shadows of the front wheels are the same (including the cobblestone outlines) and the butterfly shape in between the steering wheel and the bodywork is the same too. Curious!

The car can only be an ex-Brooklands car: faired-in front axle, disc wheels and fashionable extended radiator peak, to say nothing of the wonderful bodywork. I recognise the massive radiator supports, and these lead me to suggest the car is WO Bentley's 12/15 DFP single seater he raced at Brooklands in 1913. His company (Bentley & Bentley) held the UK concession for the French DFP at this time, and this car was used to test alloy pistons (to good effect).

Chain drive? I don't see any sign of it.

I'm not much help with identification - other than to note the left-hand gear change and the fake dumb irons...

I suggest the image is a "photoshop" of the well known photo of W O Bentley in a DFP. The image has been reversed.

Shades of Talbot record breaker, and Vauxhall 3 liter 100mph record cars, but not. Unless photo has been reversed, unusual position of levers on the left side.

It is a good looking special, but what kind of tires are those?. They look pretty rough and narrow like something made by the local wagon fixer to do the job.
