A new Spring for a *LOST* 1932 Alfa Romeo 8c Figoni

Today is the first day of Spring, and tulips, daffodils and snowdrops are all emerging from winter hibernation and bursting out into the daylight, but a much rarer creation has recently come out of a much longer period of hiding.

It seems almost unbelievable that an example of one of the great pre-war cars, a straight eight supercharged Alfa Romeo of the type that won Le Mans four times and the Mille Miglia three times, could be lost from sight for many, many decades and then be discovered about five years ago. It's only very special cars that get to park on the very expensive carpet in the foyer of the RAC Club in Pall Mall, London.
The lucky lad who had just graduated in 1937 was given this car as a 21st birthday present by his father and he kept it for 70 years.
During the war, it was hidden from the occupying forces and used for some years after the war before being garaged but well looked after until being acquired by the current owner.

The car left the factory in 1932 , was bodied in France by the coachbuilding firm of Figoni, and completed in time for first owner Mr Weinberg to compete in the Paris-Nice rally in March 1933.  Simon Moore has spent his life painstakingly recording all 8c Alfas and researching their history. His book on the 8c 2300 cars includes a picture of car no. 2211079 in the 'mystery cars' section with first owner Weinberg on the 1933 rally.

According to the existing French registration records the car passed to Count Francois de Bremond in May 1935 and he entered the Grossglockner Hillclimb that year finishing 5th in class. He may have used it for other competitions before selling it in August 1937.
The car has spent 18 months with UK restoration specialist Blakeney Motorsport and Patrick Blakeney-Edwards and his team are to be congratulated on their careful work preparing the car for road use with no detriment to the precious original condition of the car. Check out the  crackle finish on the dashboard.

If you have a 21 year old son ( or daughter), which current 'super car' would you buy them to fill them with the joys of spring?

Mr. R. Mawer, you are absolutely 100 percent correct, I could not agree with you more. You and I are obvious products of the latter 1950's, and most certainly were handed down several Y- block OHV's over those generations, soon to learn the ins and outs of turning crank power around 360 degrees at rocker arms.

I think it needs to be explained that when a car has been off the road for many years the engine should be very carefully inspected & cleaned inside before starting it up. Sometimes the old oil seems to be completely clean-but it is not ! The dirt has drained down to the bottom of the sump, (where the oil pump intake is ! )& is waiting there to be pumped around the engine, doing a terrible amount of damage, mainly to the bearings, but also to the cylinder walls, the pistons, & the oil pump. Also, the oilways in the crankcase & crankshaft need to be very carefully cleaned out. This is because, when an engine is used, oil & carbon get "cooked" inside them & sticks to the inside walls of these oilways. This is not too much of a problem when an engine is in regular use. But when the engine stands cold & unused for years, this "paste" gets hard, & can become loose. So it call fall off into the oilways. The iron crankshaft can even get rusty in the oilways, too. So-when the oil pump pushes this terrible mixture round the engine, a really good engine can be wrecked in about 2 minutes. It happens all the time ! Also, not all of the back axle, gearbox & steering box parts are covered in oil when they are out of use so often get rusted.So-sometimes, you find -if you remember to look at this oil (and if there is any !!) that it has turned orange in colour, because of this rust ! It can be a very hard world for old cars ! Not many of them get a proper recommissioning-it is a great shame!

I absolutely love this car and it is the only car I rate over a 4 1/2 litre Bentley. Today I would buy my son or daughter an Alfa Romeo 4c. Not that it is equal in any possible way to what this 8c would be in 1932 but thats what he is getting.

I might have been interested before the rotisserie cleanup, but with detergent motor oil in the crankcase, if it has been driven onto the carpet I am going to keep looking...

Congratulations to the current owner for his decision on preservation and not a high gloss restauration. My son is 18, and I didn't buy him a modern supercar, but a 48 year old MGB GT, with wire wheels and sunroof, and in preserved condition, complete with original well worn seats. This is exactly what he wanted and how he wanted it. He has a grin from ear to ear on his face, since he got it a couple of months ago, even when not driving it.

I like the idea of NOT buying him a NEW car, but one which was 5 years old.
He obviously knew what his son would do with a sports car.
But then for his son to keep it for 70 years, meant that it was very special to him.
What wonderful history !
(ps, I was bought a 15 year old car for my 17th birthday, and I wish that I had it still)
