A pictorial history of the 100 Miles

No quiz today, because next week we will start our six-day pre-war quiz and post-war puzzle. Instead a report about the 100 Miles of Amsterdam, which was held last Sunday night. It's difficult to write a about the rally as every competitor will have his or her own story to tell about their experiences, so we decided to do a pictorial write-up of the rally. A good beginning is of course the pre-rally dinner at the hotel Amrath in Amsterdam, followed by a good look at the route before the start from the parking lot. First part of the route went to a timed sprint, where all passengers of cars had to walk around their automobiles, then onwards to the fishing harbor of IJmuiden, a good place for a stop and some typical Dutch treats as raw herring (main pic) and a swell-deserved glass of 'korenwijn' (= Dutch Jenever). Several dark and lonely roads brought you to the halfway stop at the well-illuminated historical village of Hoorn, a good opportunity to get some warmth in you, be it coffee, erwtensoep (= thick soup of split peas) or something stronger, before setting out into the cold again. Passing through other historic villages like Edam -with the narrowest bridge possible- and Volendam with its many Christmas decorations brought you back to the finish, again at the parking lot of hotel Amrath. Yet this rally wasn't at all about winning or losing or just good preparation, it was all about having fun with a capital F.

It is most interesting to scroll through the entry list for the four years that this event has been run. There are some very nice and interesting cars there.

We were not the only British Entrants. The Rolls 20/25 we used had been slumbering gently in a barn for 30 years. After spending a month properly putting it back on the road, we needed to put a few hard miles on it; what better place then the 100 miles of Amsterdam.

The car performed flawlessly wafting us down the road as if pushed by an invisible hand. The same cannot be said of the riding crew who were near mutiny by the point of the Herring stop. Shortly thereafter we lost time due to the need to stop at several wayside hostelries to try & wash the fish taste out of our throats with steins of dutch beer. (Is this where dutch courage comes from??) My riding mates when entering the second bar kept saying they wanted to stick their finger in the dyke?!?!?!?!

The roads were fabulous becoming ever smaller with tight turns & picturesque bridges & villages flashing by in the blurr of our headlights. At one stage the route deteriorated to a cycle path with a thin ribbon of tarmac barely wide enough for the wheels to stay on & a deep drop off in either side into watery canals.

Fantastic cameraderie from our fellow contestants & a big thanks for Bert Degenaar who put us up at his fabulous hotel near utrecht in OUd Zuilen.
