A Pram Hood Chummy – "a car which needs no auction-style introduction"

PreWarCar of the Week

“An Austin 7 Chummy is a car which needs no auction-style introduction.” We totally agree with Tom Hardman. Therefore we immediately get down to business.

OM8095 was supplied by Birmingham dealer George Heath ltd on the 7th July 1925. This particular example has often been referred to as the reference Pram Hood Chummy. In 1934 the car was placed into long-term dry storage, before being resurrected in 1978. Undoubtedly this period of layup has meant that many original features like the Coventry upholstery and hood bag still survive and in very useable condition. As also can be seen in the photographs.

The Chummy (# A2-1022) was obtained by a new custodian and dispatched to well known Austin 7 Specialist Tony White, for restoration. A new hood and side screens to correct pattern were produced, along with fresh paint and renewed brightwork and interior side and door panels. A true award winning concours car throughout the 1980’s and 90’s.

When in 2009 the car went to Paul Rogers Engineering. Paul confirmed that the engine had never previously been restored! So the original crank was upgraded to a splash fed Phoenix crank, new Honda pistons and replacement rods were fitted. Besides this, the valves and springs were also replaced.

The current owner has competed in the VSCC Light Car Section and also participated in Chummy Ladies events. Which is where most of the miles would have been completed, and the new owner, a true enthusiast, can definitely enjoy there many more...
