A smiling face after a serious rear-end impact. Avion Voisin?

“A French friend sent me this photo - the car has had a serious rear-end impact but the driver looks happy with his escape. No mention of the make of car - Avions Voisin perhaps and does anyone know anything about the person or the incident?”

This message was sent to us by Nick. Can anyone help answer his question?

The marks on the side of the front wing and tyre could indicate that the car was 'rolled' and ended up in a field!

If it spun off the road and went backward through a hedge - and rolled over the back of the body at the same time - it could explain the damage being mainly confined to the rar of the car.

Suggestion only but worth considering.

An intriguing picture. Everyone seems to think its a factory-made Hotchkiss from about 1930, and I agree. But the accident? It appears the car is still in the place it happened: off road, in isolated, scrubby heathland. The blow was struck downward from the near side, across the back seat, smashing the body, springs, etc. into the ground. That is why I think the car still in the place where the incident happened. The bludgeoning instrument (a large pole dropped by a crane?) has been removed. Now, why would a car be smashed with a pole in the middle of nowhere? A: some nefarious activity. Either one party got suckered to a place where their car was deliberately smashed in front of them by a crane with a large log, or the car was take to the site after theft or forced appropriation. The gentleman is a senior member of the Gendarmerie.

Pure guess-work, of course.

The car could be an Hotchkiss AM2 (13cv) or AM80 (17cv) 1930-1931. The body is from factory, the plate is low front the door.

Clearly not a Voisin, but an early 1930s Hotchkiss. AM2 model I think.
