Today we will reveal the answer to last weeks quiz, and of course, nominate a winner. But we will also tell you who has won the six-month competition!
Fist, the car in the photograph is indeed a reconstruction of an Elfe racing cyclecar. Not “a prewar car for crash test dummies” as Johan Vandenberghe said.
This cyclecar was built by Cyrille Verchambre, Marc Ménager and Pascal Zela from museum L'atelier des Pionniers of Gallardon. Gerd Klioba explained; “They built it around the original Anzani V-twin engine, which they had in storage." Henk Visscher added: “they heavily relied on period photography to rebuild this 1920/1921 sports cyclecar. Original Elfes were produced between 1919 and 1923 by Ateliers Defrance Frères (Vierzon), France, co-owned by Eugène Mauve, founder of the Bol d’Or.”
Fritz Hegemann added to this: they were “available as single-seater and tandem-two-seater. Aircooled 20°-V2-Anzani-engine with 1.100cc (some say 703cc, others 984cc), using a motorcycle-gearbox, a multi-plate-clutch and a chain-drive”. “In the August 1920, Le Mans Grand Prix de L’U.M.F. (273.6 Km,16 laps of 17.1Km), cars no. 1 & 2, both Elfe-Anzani, were driven by Andre Rousseau and Mauve. Neither finished,” as Clive Knott told us. Some of you also knew that this Elfe took part in the 1921 Gaillion Hillclimb. Clive also commented; “in 1922, Mauve founded the Bol D’or 24-hour race for vehicles less than 1100cc capacity with solo drivers.” Finally, Alan Spencer added; “from 1922 to 1924, Mauve built cyclecars in Levallois-Perret under his own name.”
This single seated Elfe cyclecar is “on show at Musée Atelier des Pionniers in Bailleau-Armenonville, France”, as Hendrix explained. You all did a pretty good job, But there can only be one winner. Congratulations Fritz Hegemann! The jury decided you gave the most complete answer. You receive the full 5 points! Thank you all for participating.
This Elfe is one of the cars that will be present during the fantastic Festival of Slowth event, which will be held the 2nd and 3rd of June 2018 in Crux-la-Ville, in the beautiful Burgundy. As the name already is saying, it is not an event for the fast cars but for the really slow ones. So you will see a real passion for small cyclecars and special mechanical inventions.
