About what is it? Quiz #473: Whitford Special

Today the answer to last week’s quiz #473. One of you gave the perfect answer (and there is no doubt he found the source of the photograph)! We will tell you straight ahead who the winner of the quiz is. Drum roll…. Congratulations Gerd you were totally correct about everything you wrote in your answer and was able to put it into less than 100 words.

The car in the photograph is indeed a Whitford special, hand build by Mr Ivor Lionel Graham White. He is the tall guy leaning on the windscreen and called all his cars specials. Ivor worked in Erne Wilson's Garage on Alexandra Road in Six Bells near Abertillery (UK). The photograph was taken at an all-night rally organised by the Abertillery Motor Club from Southern Wales. The other people in the photograph are other members of the car club, among which Fred Day, John Morgan and John Merritt (seated in the car).

The Whitford as pictured is a real special. There is not much documented about these cars. But looking at the grill and the wheels, to us it looks like the car was based on a British Ford with 1172 cc side valve engine as also Gerd told us. The chassis we cannot say with certainty. It might well be an Anglia, a Prefect or a Popular as some of you mentioned. It is very likely one of those three. As Mr White also drove another Ford Popular which he used for rallying. Besides this Ford, he also drove a Sunbeam-Talbot which he built and restored himself from scratch.

This is the current top 3 of the six-month competition, sponsored by Hans Compter Rare Cars:

1. Gerd Klioba with 24 points.

2. Fried Stol and Frits Hegemann with 17 points.

3. Henk Visscher with 8 points.

The wheels are definitely Ford, but I believe the radiator shell is from a Flying Standard ('37-'39 or maybe a few post-war, all models have pretty much the same grill).
The 1172cc Ford engine exhausts on the left hand side, but when the photo is reversed the words "....... Special" are clear on the bonnet, and the engine now exhausts on the correct side and the driver is now a the navigator.
Nice trick but you can't fool me.
