About what is it? Quiz #479: 1914 Twombly

Today the solution to the What is it? Quiz #479 which we published on Saturday the 22nd of September 2018.

Most of you gave the correct answer. We are not sure how the name of this pre-war is pronounced Rory McIntyre if it is Toom-bly or Twom-bly. Maybe there is someone who can tell us. But the pre-war car in the photograph is indeed a 1914 Twombly two-passenger tandem roadster. They were made in New York and designed by Willard Irving Twombly as Reg Harris and Robbie Marenzi mentioned in their comment.

C.Gillingham answered correctly “Twombly’s were built between 1913 and 1915. They used a water-cooled four-cylinder Driggs-Seabury engine and friction drive with a two-speed driveshaft. They also used an under-slung chassis, said to create a low center of gravity and better road handling and with a 9” road clearance. There were three body styles available in 1914; this one is the Two-Passenger Tandem, as well as the Light Delivery. Bore: 2-3/4” inches. Stroke: 4” inches. Wheelbase: 100” inches. Track: 38” inches."

Gerd Klioba told us that this is “one of three known remaining worldwide.” And Rory McIntyre wrote that he knows a similar car in Ontario, Canada. Ron Brennan and C.Gillingham recognised the car and have seen it (several times) in Queensland, Austrailia.

But Peter Russell has an advantage as he told us he “owns one of the 4 known survivors”. In fact, his car provided the templates and patterns to make the body of this one. He even included a photograph of his own Twombly.

It was difficult for the jury to decide who gave the most complete answer. But after consultation is decided that the full 5 points go to C.Gillingham! Congratulations!

Today we will not give you the top 3 as Quiz #479 was the last one in the six-month competition. Tomorrow the 30th of September 2018 we reveal the final winner of the PreWarCar.com What is it? Quizzes and the PostWarClassic.com Tough to Crack Car Puzzles in the six-month competition sponsored by Hans Compter Rare Cars.

Have a good weekend everyone!
