About What is it? Quiz #489: 1914 Briscoe Model B

Today we reveal the answer to last weeks What is it? Quiz #489!

The PreWarCar in the photograph is indeed a “mid 'teens Briscoe” as amongst many others John answered correctly. Well done!

Gerd Klioba his answer was slightly more comprehensive than the one Robert Smith gave. He told us; “this is a 1914 Briscoe Model B Deluxe Tourer.

Anders Svenfelt could tell us; “it was called "the First French Car at an American Price". Brothers Benjamin and Frank had studied automobile production in France at Renault in Billancourt and called themselves Briscoe Frères. Benjamin had started manufacturing parts for Olds Motor Works and later worked together with Jonathan Maxwell. Four-cylinder L-head engine developing 33 hp at 1600 rmp. Electric starter and light and semi-elliptic springs all around. Lightweight due to paper maché body.”

Robbie Marenzi also shared with us that; “Benjamin Briscoe was also involved in many other car ventures, including Buick, Maxwell-Briscoe, United States Motor Co., Columbia, Stoddard Dayton, Brush, Titan taxi, Earl, Alden-Sampson trucks and in France Briscoe Freres, Ajax and Bellanger used Briscoe chassis and engines.”

We gave a hint about the single headlight. Which was indeed very distinctive but unfortunately illegal in many US states as Gerd, Neil and Anders also mentioned in their comment. As you can read, various people recognised the car. Unfortunately Larry A. Lewis the Sizaire-Naudin you have seen is not the same car as the one in the photograph. You can try again next week, when we have a new quiz car in the six-month competition, sponsored by Hans Compter Rare Cars.

The winner of Quiz #489 is… Anders Svenfelt! Congratulations Anders! We add 5 points to your account.

Have a good weekend!
