It is all about making a good first impression. This applies to both individuals as well as (pre-war) cars during Amelia Island Concours d `elegance. From the 7th of March until the 10th of March 2019 the golf carts of the Golf Club of Amelia Island will be replaced with the shiniest PreWarCars and PostWarClassics from all over the world. Years of preparing have preceded to show the cars in this top condition. Hours and hours of hard work dedication and love for the vehicles can be admired in Florida.
Also, the auction houses are present during this important weekend. Bonhams promise to make a fabulous first impression on the 7th of March 2019 selling cars from the prestigious collection of Don C. Boulton.
When going through the auction catalogue, we looked for cars which immediately caught our eye. The first car that stood out was this 1910 Pope-Hartford Model T 40HP Limousine. Probably one of the most famous American marques of the Brass Era. Which is believed to have been initially shipped to Uruguay. There it was delivered with two bodies, this limousine body and a touring body. As explained in the catalogue: “According to the vintage Uruguayan registration book that remains with the car, it had been owned by Diego Pous, and was registered in his name in 1919 and 1920. At one time Pous was the Uruguayan Ambassador to the Holy See and is said to have used the car while in Rome and Vatican City. Pope Pius X is reported to have ridden in the car during its service abroad.” Not only a great appearance but the car also has an impressive history.
The next car you recognise immediately on its pear shape-radiator. This 1923 Bugatti Type 23 Brescia has a 1,496cc, 4-Cylinder OHV inline engine. The original long wheelbase chassis has a boattail body which seats three people. The performance of this sporty and lightweight Bugatti Type 23 make it the perfect touring car. Previous owners have participated with the vehicle in numerous events and regularly vitiated International Bugatti Meetings throughout the world. We are curious to know what its next event will be.
The third car which made quite an impact on us is this big 50 HP Simplex. This robust 1914 car was specifically built for fast highway travel. The Simplex could easily run at 75 mph thanks to its T-head four-cylinder engine, which was a sophisticated design employing internal timing gears, pressurised lubrication, and massive crankshaft. The later added speed body is built to a Holbrook design with two very comfortable black leather bucket seats. Photographs on file show the car retained the cowl and fabric windshield of its original body. This exceptionally powerful and well-preserved machine definitely gives you an exciting driving experience. Who can stop you now?!
