What a wonderful sight! We see American racing driver Mrs. Andrew (Joan) Cuneo in a muddy chain-driven Knox. In the car with today’s inspiring and very successful Friday lady is Louise Disbrow – American race car driver in one of the most prestigious automobile races in the world, the Indianapolis 500. The young man next to him is her 9-year-old son Antonio Newton Cuneo.

The picture is taken before a Fairgrounds track race during Mardi Gras in New Orleans in 1909. From 20 to 22 February Ralph DePalma, Bob Burman and Joan Cuneo competed against each other in different races. This would be Joan's last opportunity to race in an American Automobile Association (AAA) event. Who knows what triggered the event and what happened the following month?

Although Ms. Cuneo had an interesting life, the man with the goggles, Louis Disbrow, sitting next to her is even more fascinating. A committed race driver, he participated in four of the very first Indianapolis 500 races and many others. Later on in he offered for sale a two passenger sports car for which we have the brochure. It has been repeated that following a a racing accident he was pronounced dead, only to wake up in the morgue. The most fascinating part of the story, however, was the fact that he was accused of killing two people in a jealous rage but managed not to be convicted. Born of a wealthy family, he died a pauper.

Nobody seems to have noticed that the car on the newspaper photo isn't a Knox, but Mrs. Cuneo's Lancia 'Lampo'. It seems that that car had won the 1910 Savannah Challenge Cup in the hands of Billy Knipper.
