As you very likely have seen on the photographs we published last weekend, we had a great weekend at Classic Days Schloss Dyck. One of the highlights was the BMW 327/ 328 that participated in the Concours d’Elegance. The car was in restored condition and the owner was using this quality car on a regular base. This made us enthusiastic and when back home, the first thing we did was scrolling through our online marketplace.
Our eye quickly found a potential car: an impressive 1938 BMW 327/8 Cabriolet. Not only is the car ready for the final paint job and assembly, but it is also a matching number car and therefore has the potential to become one of the most desired ones. The history of the car is known, it was first delivered to Ernst Henne in Munich, Germany on July 14th, 1938. Manufactured in July 1938 and originally DuoTone Green.
Our main question is why someone would sell the car in this condition instead of finishing it, keeping it or selling it after that (wouldn’t that make the car worth more?). We contacted the current owner of the car and asked him about the BMW 327 and why sell it at this point in time? He told us: “I am offering up an exciting opportunity for the new owner to step in and finish my beloved triple carburettor [80 hp] BMW 327/8 Cabriolet.
All of the hard work has been done. The spares and replacement parts have been purchased and everything is pretty much ready for assembly once it has been painted. The front seats have been trimmed in a beautiful high-end greenish-brown leather with an extra 2 very large hides to finish up the rest of the car. The motor and gearbox have been rebuilt and the instruments refurnished and re-faced.
The BMW Certificate I acquired in Munich, Germany verifies that this is a matching numbers 327. It does have the bonus of a factory racing cylinder head with the 3 carburettors, stamped OZ 80. Thereby transforming this beautiful 55 hp BMW to a swift 80 hp motorcar. Before the car was disassembled, I drove it for about 4 months to assure that all of the mechanical components were in good working order and well sorted. A new brake system has been installed. The wheels have already been painted in their original German silver. I had intended to paint her German Silver with Sage Green wings, rear-wheel cover and spats. According to the Certificate it was originally 'Duotone Green'.
Brand new items of note: windscreen and glass assembly, wiring harness with instructions, rebuilt front shock absorbers, re-lined petrol tank, re-cored radiator, rebuilt triple carburettors, rebuilt original factory clock and all instruments, bumpers, steering wheel, all new door handles and interior switches, tires and tubes, etc. Everything comes directly from Germany and no expense was spared when it came to quality. The car has been sprayed just a couple of weeks ago with high-build epoxy primer. This was done after of course the entire body was brought down to the bare metal. Bonnet and doors have already been properly fit and she's ready for her paint job.
Due to circumstances beyond my control, I have to sell the car. An extra clean and re-machined engine block that is just a few digits away from the original motor in the car is also available with the purchase. My asking price is €179.000 (or your best offer).”
It is a wonderful chance to acquire a very solid car with all of the hard work already done. Accept the challenge and finish this BMW 327/8! We would love to see this cabriolet back on the road soon!
Would you like to know more? Have a look at the advert in our online marketplace and/or contact the owner. We hope to see the car back in Concours condition next year at Classic Days (or any other event where it will shine!).
