Back to back: Cord Brougham or Stutz Custom?

And yet another private classic car and automobilia collection has come to the end of the road – the collection of car appraiser extraordinaire Dennis Mitosinka will be sold off entirely this week in its former Hupmobile dealership base in Santa Ana, Southern California. The number of lots is huge and between the number plates, vintage photographs, original design drawings, books and hood ornaments, you’ll be able to find some real jewels as well as some real kitsch. Have a look and surprise yourself.

1930 Cord L-29 Brougham

There are over 30 cars as well, and we picked out just two that struck us and below. The gorgeous 1930 Cord L-29 Brougham with its low four-door sedan body is one of just 13 believed to survive and comes with history dating back to 1954. The paint colours of Tongan Maroon and black fit the car’s style particularly well with just the right amount of patina and wear. The interior has been fully refurbished not too long ago though, after which the car made it to a concours. Sold at no reserve and estimated at $60,000 to $90,000 it seems well worth that sort of money to us.

1929 Stutz Sport Custom

The Stutz in the same sale is a year older but has perhaps led a harder life. Again its early history is unknown to the seller but it is believed to have been converted into what it is today on the West Coast during the late 1940s or early 1950s. The car’s chassis was shortened to 107-inch wheelbase and a 1932 Stutz DV32 inline eight-cylinder engine was fitted, mated to a three-speed Warner transmission with free-wheeling to the two-speed rear axle from an Auburn Twelve. The hand-built body is made in steel and uses parts a 1928-1930 Auburn Speedster, Duesenberg Model J, two different Cadillac V16s, 1934 LaSalle front and 1937 Lincoln Zephyr. A real Frankenstein of a car? Some may think so, but we absolutely love it and would be tempted if we had the money for the Cord in our pocket. This one is estimated kind of similar at $50,000 to $80,000 and again comes at no reserve. The car will need total restoration but is totally unique and period and is still on its California black plates. Preferable over the equally low-slung Cord..?
