It’s a bit of an abnormal year for auctions but Historic Auctioneers is 10 years young and at least try to celebrate this with a grand anniversary sale at Windsorview Lakes on the 18th of this month - with lots and lots of lots (no pun intended).
We picked out just two of these lots for our own back-to-back comparison here. What they have in common is that they are both 1934 MGs with their small four-cylinder engines, cut out doors and aero screens. But that’s where the similarities end!
First of them is a 1934 MG J2 with matching numbers and its correct clam style shaped front wings, only fitted towards the end of the J2’s production run. The car was restored in 1994 using a new ash frame and with the help of a well-known specialist. Over a quarter of a century after this restoration was started, the car still looks very good to us in its red paint and with red leather interior. It may need some tiny little finishing touches but certainly seems worth the estimate of £24- to £29,000 if you ask us.
The other MG is a 1934 P-Type Special, which is considered to sell for about double the price (£50- to £60,000). Quite a difference and you can ask yourself what you’ll get for that extra money. Well, no registration, as this is a racer! And it has been for quite a while. Starting its life as a standard PA model, it was modified for the track as early as in the 1950s. While the chassis was shortened and reinforced, the front suspension heavily modified and a body made in the style of the Maserati 250F, it does perhaps remind of the ultra-rare MG R-Type single-seater. In the early 1990s, the car made its way from the UK to Denmark, moved on to Germany next and was still being further developed when it found its way to Italy, where it was found being unused for the last two decades by the seller. Now with De Dion type rear suspension, 746cc engine with Godfrey supercharger, preselector gearbox and magneto ignition plus upgraded brakes, this is a cool racer in a style we absolutely love.
So… What is your favourite of the two?
