Berliet, it's not just a truck ! (UPDATE: 1911 'survivor' replica)

Vincent Juvenelle sends this very nice illustration of a true 'torpedo' body in a 1914 Berliet catalogue. The car is described as a 22HP Torpedo Sport with a topspeed of 110 km/h, a very good performance before the WWI !
Vincent has never seen a similar car of this era with a tail as long as this one and wonders if anything like it has survived.

update: Peter Ransom reports there is one known survivor, and it's even older (1911) than the one depicted in the brochure, see the Veteran Car Club of Australia

Whatever be the choice of words the fact remains that it is not the car as in the illustration(chassis different, body recreated). So there are no survivors of the 1914 Berliet with torpedo body. But Mr Esmore deserves praise for bringing alive a car which was a mere sketch before.

So long as it is referred to as a rebuild. So many cars have been rebodied, some having their Original (GOOD), bodies removed, in order to do this .
Then as I say
"It all adds to the provenance"

Peter and Stuart: So, one finds remains of a 1911 car; rebuilds it with great care and ability; has no body but sees a photo of an attractive 1914 body, so builds one from scratch. The frame and mechanicals may be a 1911 'survivor' (there are plenty of them), but the body?? --it is not a 'survivor', but brand new (in 1990 or thereabouts).

The Australian 1911 'Sporting Torpedo' Berliet is a lovely, eye-catching car, but I don't think it is correct to call it a 'survivor'. It was discovered 20+ years ago and rebuilt, the body style chosen when the owner saw a photo in a Berliet book, and copied it.

driver's door is missing in the aussie car.

editor: the door in the Berliet design is probably a fake design door, just to please the eye. You would not be able to use the driver's door due to gearshift and handbrake blocking the entry exactly.

As it happens, I yesterday (!) found a somewhat derelict but restorable car with a similar body, installed on a Brasier chassis with a 6-cyl engine dating from ca 1909-1910.

There exists a Berliot car in India, somewhere of 1920, a saloon or Limo in a famous collection.

Yes, there's a survivor and it's even older than the catalogue suggests. A 1911 Berliet with this body style and in almost the same colour is well known in Australian old car circles. Use this link for some pictures: http://www.vccaq.org/Rears1911-1914.html
