Bas de Voogd wrote to us about the birthplace of some of today’s mystery Bugatti’s: “Many were created in the workshop of Jean-Marie Bats who lived opposite famous Bugatti-dealer De Dobbeleer in Brussels. He created several bodies for them. I know this first hand as in the 1980s I bought the contents of Bats´s workshop from this master panel beater himself.”
Comment by editor RB: Frankly I prefer not to be remembered of this episode as I went along with Bas to collect all the tools. While cleaning out the workshop, I photographed everything; two rolls of film (this was way back in the analog period), about 72 gorgeous colour-photographs of a time-warp workshop. Only later, with the films developed, I discovered that my camera had went haywire, destroying all photos beyond repair.
