Boys only. Or not?

Maserati has been around for a century (enjoy the first great Maserati show of the year in Maastricht). And since that start in 1914 the make is ever so masculine. The fact that the company was founded by brothers only – from a family of seven children, none of them a girl – says a bit. Prewar Maserati's were hairy machines, with four, six, eight or even sixteen cylinders. Some had superchargers boosting power to over 300bhp and top speed to 170mph. Some had independent suspension on all wheels so they could corner too - as long as you had arms like Popeye.

Girls liked that. But they were just allowed to pose with them, as we have never come across any photographic evidence of women actually driving them. That all changed after the War, when a 22-year old girl got attracted to motor sports. She made a bet with her brothers saying she could win a race. And she did. That girl became a works driver for Maserati and the first woman ever in a Grand Prix: Maria Teresa de Filippis. She’s still about, too, and not too frail to steer a Maserati over a track. Boy, what a girl.

No, Richard; she certainly was not.

Girls empowered! That's what millions want to see. It started long ago and it still continuous. Many women are indeed better drivers and racers than men. Great post!

The car in the photo is a 1936 Maserati V8-RI number 4504. The owner/driver is George Weaver seated in the car. I happen to own a 1935 V8-RI 4502. These unique cars were new technology by Maserati, designed to compete with Mercedes and Auto Union in the 750 kg Grand Prix class. The cars featured a new streamlined body, 4-wheel independent suspension, a transaxle, new steering, and the first V8 engine used in Grand Prix cars. They only won one Grand Prix, but the design paved the way for the later cars that won Indy twice. My car had 20 years of racing history in Grand Prix, Vanderbilt Cup, Indy, prewar ARCA, and SCCA.

It is indeed 'Poison Lil'. there's a more recent picture here:

http://www.vanderbiltcupraces.com/index.php/blog/article/thursday_august_25_2010_the_maserati_v8ri_vanderbilt_cup_racer_at_the_sarat

The driver is presumably Barbara's husband George, who was a stalwart of both the pre-war ARCA and post-war SCCA.

Confusingly, there were two cars called 'Poison Lil' racing in America in the 1930s and 1940s and several websites mistakenly identify the other one - a much-campaigned dirt oval car built by Paul Weirick - as the V8RI.

On a more pedantic note - Maria Teresa de Filippis was the first woman to drive in a Formula 1 race, but she was by no means the first to drive in a Grand Prix!

The car pictured is indeed "Poison Lil" and is still owned by the Weaver family. It currently is on display at the Saratoga auto museum in New York state. The Weavers operated Thompson race track in Connecticut which is re-opening for road racing this spring after a 40+ year intermission.
I think that the Maserati in the main photo is either a 4cm or a 6cm as it is hard to tell from the outside. Circa 1937. I owned a 1937 6cm in the 1960s. A wonderful car.
Supposedly it's a V8RI known as 'Poison Lil' in the US where it raced. The lady standing behind it is Barbara Weaver.
