Bread-and-butter motors at MPH

Oh yes, you’ll find exotics at Bonhams 20 September MPH sale, but if we had to stick a theme to this particular auction we’d say it’ll have to be British non-extravaganza. Quite a lot of the cars on offer tick the box for lovely bread-and-butter vehicles of days long gone. Think BMC products of the 1960s as well as Land Rovers that saw good use, a couple of Minis. MG’s and Jags. All the sort of cars you could see in regular use up until not too long ago. There’s hardly any race cars or supercars of its era. Perhaps a bit of a relief in these days?

Does that apply to the pre-war offerings also? Well, kind of. There are four Rolls-Royces, an Auburn Speeder replica and a fabulous 1912 Daimler landaulette but furthermore, you’ll also find some very modest vehicles, too. We fell for this 1921 Belsize lorry, made in Manchester and in wonderful patinated condition. It comes from a deceased estate and looks as if it could serve any craftsman on his travels today. The engine looks to be a four-cylinder to us. These surely have to be spare plugs, not twin-spark configuration?

Another favourite is this 1928 Renault Monosix with its 1.5-litre six-cylinder engine certainly more upmarket and sophisticated. This one looks not over-restored either. It’s perhaps no surprise that the car seems to have French vintage history - the history file is described as ‘great’, including the original logbook plus some spares.

Fitting in perfectly with the bread-and-butter theme also is this 1931 Alvis TJ 12/50 with its four-cylinder and small dimensions. This one originally was a saloon but has been turned into a roadster with ‘Duck’s back’ when the car was fully restored with a new ash frame. Hey, the original body had been scrapped in the 1970s, so there was no real excuse.
