Bright days ahead

This summer’s auction season is surely different than that of all previous ones, but auction houses are doing their very best to continue offering and selling cars, keeping with the current regulations and with most of the sales taking place online now. Brightwells is among them and has now announced a great sale between the 10th and 13th of this month, with 120 lots going under the online hammer, with estimates which seem low to us.

So let’s have a look at some of them with the summer theme in our heads. We absolutely love this Peugeot 402 ‘Commerciale’ of 1935 although we’d rather call it a ‘Familiale’ since it could offer a place to the whole family, including a few nephews and nieces if necessary. It’s got sofas rather than seats, the big clamshell boot and the cool looks, too. The car is said to have been fully restored recently and come with a large file of history. The estimate of £11- to 13,000 would certainly make it a steal we’d think.

In the same league, perhaps, and just estimated slightly more expensive at £16- to 20,000 is this Vauxhall Grosvenor ‘Big Six’, also of 1935 but with of course a six- rather than a four-in-line. According to Brightwells, it is one of just 9 left running worldwide (!) and from long term lady ownership. Look at the space in the rear with those great folding seats – how cool is that to take the family out?

This 1926 Sunbeam 14/40 Tourer would be our favourite for pottering down country roads, if only it was for being able to let the sunshine on your head. Estimate: £35- to 40,000. Another 14/40 is this early MG Sports model of 1929, which would be perfect when there’s just two of you. It’s a car sold new to Ireland and still comes with its original Irish logbook and more early documentation. The estimate of £31- to 34,000 seems not so bad to us. Oh – hang on, there’s a dickey seat, too, so if necessary you can take your mother-in-law with you on your travels.
