Per Austin Chummy up and down the Americas

Remember our article about a year ago about Eunice Kratky and Guy Butcher going from Baltimore to South America by Austin Seven? After they finished restoring the car, they started their trip in July of this year. We hadn't heard from them for some time, but have just received an update on their adventures. Eunice and Guy are doing just fine and by now they have travelled over 6,000 miles and are currently in Napa, California. Travelling through Canada the Austin had some broken spokes in Whitehorse on the Yukon and a failed wheel bearing on the White Pass going into Alaska, but that's all fixed and the Austin is back on the road again. But it's still a looong, looong way to Tierra del fuego! More photos on their website.

Chris Bamford is a very modest man. He epitomises all that is good in the ENTHUSIAST; all of his cars 1912-1947 are on the button and used almost daily. Indeed when we stayed with Chris and Michelle the 1912 KisselKar was the car used to show us the sights. The 1947 Dodge was used in March 2012 for a trip along the Ice Road onto the Baring Sea.
Simply awesome! We would have struggled on the adventure without Chris's help. Thanks buddy!

I second Stewart's recommendation of 'Coleman's Drive' A cracking good read about an amazing adventure, undertaken at a time when there was no such thing as instant electronic communication to get you out of trouble.

I met Guy by chance last May in the UK and invited them to stop in Edmonton as they were traveling through to Alaska. We had a lovely visit, I got to drive the wee 7 (no wonder they call it a "Chummy"), and there are plans for another get-together in the future. What an amazing journey. Good for them!

The first chap to tackle the Americas was John Coleman . His epic drive over unmade roads from Buenes Aires to New York in 1959 was a fabulous achievement and his book" Colemans drive " was published in 1962. A worthwhile enjoyable read. See some more information

The yellow chummy was certainly seen going well as it passed me going south along highway 1, the north California coast road; so surprised I did not have chance to wave them down to say hello; I had just competed the motorcycle cannonball 2012 coast to coast on my 1928 Indian, but that's another storey; best wishes for the rest of the trip to you both; ian
