' What type of Chandler did I buy? ' (update: 1918 Model 18 )

Mr. Sumi Toshiyuki from Japan recently acquired this time battered Chandler. We understand it was owned a long time by the Tohoku University of Tokyo.  The new owner knows it must be of 1920-25 vintage but is not sure which exact year and model. The fact that there are no papers with the car and no engine either nor any identification plates don't make things more easy (check the Chandler & Cleveland Club). Also the photos we received do not give away a lot, but the lack of frontwheel brakes makes us think it is a pre 1925 model. The slightly domed radiator which gives the impression to be painted and not nickeled leads us to 1924. Possibly the exact shape of the wings and the wire wheels will get you further than we did. We understand this was a relative popular car in Japan in its era.  So - when restored - it would be a welcome guest at car shows. Can you help Sumi Toshiyuki identifying his new car?

This Chandler is a 1918 Model 18. The motor number on the brass tag would fall between 32,001 and 62,000. The serial number found stamped on the surface of the right frame rail in the area of the right front wheel would be between 35,001 and 65,000. Chandlers 1917 and older had the headlight forks mounted to the frame rather than the fenders. On Chandlers 1919 and later the radiator filler neck was not as tall. An engine from a 1919 to 1921 Chandler will fit a Model 18.

The chassis No is on the Leg of the engine, up to 1919, after this date plate was on Right side of chassis , so if there are holes on the chassis leg it will be post 1919, or if lucky there might be a plate, so if no holes are found it has to be 1917/18/19.

in addtion to my comment about the Chandler fenders the early ones were "sloping" as in the picture, while the new ones from 1921 onwards were parallel with the wheels like e.g. bycicle mudguards

I agree on the shape of the fenders with Kit Foster. On later Chandler models, the fenders followed/ ran parallel with the front wheels. These parallel types of fenders were introduced from 1921 onwards. Although the pictures don’t give you the full details, I have seen a picture of a 1919 Chandler Six Touring with similarities.

The style of fender points to pre-1922.
