DFP Engine in the Australian Bush

Peter Ransom writes: "The son of a friend here in Australia spotted this engine, which appears to be a vintage-era D.F.P.   It is to be auctioned  in late September. It's of no interest to me but somebody out there will be looking for this engine.  We thought PreWarCar was probably the only way the wide world would get to hear about it. I also realise that you're not a charity so if you're unable to give this any coverage I will completely understand."

Editor: Dear Peter, no problem at all. When it is interesting we will always consider posting it. Yet of course we would love to hear that you notified the auction people that we did. Also we hope to hear from our readers which exact type DFP this may be.

This is the CIME made engine that was fitted to the 4 cylinder engined shaft drive GN. The block's water capacity was nearly zero so the guarantee claims for overheating broke GN for the 3rd time.

Interesting what James Ashford says. In the same auction is a rusty little vintage racing car project with BEAN twin ignition 4 cyl. Wonder if this was a real racing car with history.

I wonder how many of these bits and pieces will, appear at the Bendigo Swap Meet in November? The place will probably be awash with them!

Many years ago I rescued an equally sad and unwanted engine from a pile of scrap at a similar auction and stored it in my shed wondering what to do with it until Prewar Car came along and I was able to find it a home with someone restoring an Ansaldo in switzerland as this auction is very close to my home I will attend to watch with interest the effect of Prewar Car publicity on its sale

I think you can see that there's a huge amount of stuff and unfortunately there's no catalogue or lot numbering - you have to be there on the day and "follow the auctioneer". So this will test the enthusiasm of the DFP brigade!

Looking at the auction pictures there sure are tons of rusty parts and pieces and some interesting vehicles - not too far out of the way but still a remote site.

Well Jeremy, by the look of that engine and how far it has sunk into the dirt i would say it will only turn over with the help of a shovel when it gets dug out of the ground. Just love to see these Aussie collections way out in the middle of nowhere.

Robert, Just click on 'to be auctioned' and all the details are there. It is interesting just how much gets left outside in Australia. Dry climate would help but an engine sitting on the ground whether tin or ali must rot out.

It looks like a DFP type 7cv. Two of these cars took part in the 1928 Australian Grand Prix, held on the Phillip Island road course.

I am currently restoring a 1923 DFP "Petite" and recognise this as a series 1 CIME engine used by DFP as by the 1920's they no longer made their own engines. If it comes up for auction I could be interested but need to know condtion of engine - if the engine turns over etc.

If you take the head off, I think you will find it confirms it is from a spider model!! Look out by the way, as they are often poisonous!!
