Doodlebug Girl

Richard Campbell: Since the term Doodlebug was used to describe the V1 flying bombs, I'm guessing that a homemade tractor in the UK is called something else. But, here in the states, a common name for tractors made from old cars was "Doodlebug". They were fairly common during the war, when new tractors were unavailable. I don't know anything about this particular Doodlebug tractor, but I looks to have been made from a Ford Model A.

editor: We have seen many car based tractors before. But not as charming(click) as this one!

The car on the 'Freeway' looks to be about 1941 model- possibly a Plymouth. The young lady and her dog are not dressed for working on the farm, and the tractor appears to be on the forecourt of a service station with 'clean rest rooms': it was probably put there as a novelty attraction. All of which makes me think this may be an early post war picture. The US economy boomed post war, and makeshift tractors such as this Ford would soon have been replaced by real ones.

Such tractors were made in fair numbers in North Wales were I live, as you say during the last war when commercially produced ones weren't available.
The car of choice was almost invariably the Morris Cowley or larger engined Oxford, and most of the ones I have seen over the years have been Flatnose examples presumably because the chassis of the model was more robust than the earlier Bullnose. Their reliability and ability to cope with hard work even when neglected of maintenance was legendary. Many of these conversions were used specifically as hay mowers, an old Deering or similar side rake horse drawn mower being slung between the axles of the shortened chassis. The work was usually carried out by the local blacksmith, there being a smithy in most villages at that time.
