Driving home the Model A

Gregory Wells recently decided to buy and left on Monday with his new purchase trying to drive it home on own wheels:
"Been wanting a driver quality antique car to tour with for a few years now and I finally found one at a price point I could afford. So I pulled the trigger on the purchase of this car about a week ago. The price was too good to pass up, barely into five figures in USD. As you may know, I'm in the Atlanta area and the Model A is in McMinnville, Oregon, a little bit southwest of Portland, so we're 2,700 miles apart. I'm going to attempt to drive the car back to Atlanta from Oregon.

I imagine many of us have done something like this. In 1968 I bought a '28 Hudson Super Six sight unseen, flew to Melbourne to complete the purchase and then drove it home to Perth, 2,100 miles away, in four days. In those days some 600 miles across the desert was unsealed and just a sandy track in places. No backup, no AAA, hundreds of miles between service stations, no credit cards, no ATMs, no overnight shipping from a marque-specific vendor. But I was young and besides, what could possibly go wrong? Everything, of course, but nothing did. That adventure probably accounts for the 29 Hudson I have today. Go for it, George!

Good luck with that one. I once made the mistake of thinking the USA is a country (its my inner European'ness). It's a continent. The distances are vast and but happily the population mostly friendly. I'm envious of your journey and time at 50mph max. Keep off the Interstate, see more and fear less those thundering 18 wheelers (arctic's in English parlance.) When in places like Wyoming, remember gas stations scan be 150 miles apart. Good luck.

Point number 4. I'd leave the "chase car" at home. In my experience it's usually the back-up vehicle that ends up getting towed to a garage by the pre-war car! More bother than they're worth!!
