Our attentive readers might have seen a PreWarCar very similar to this one in our online Magazine. This (American) Fiat was the topic of discussion in our Monday Mystery column before. First in the (American) Fiat mystery and back in 2015, we were seeking info on this Fiat touring.
We again received an e-mail from our friend Thom. Attached was this picture from 1922. We see D. Butler in a car at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania during a Pickett's Charge reenactment by the United States Marines.
Have a look at this video! How amazing would it be to drive your PreWarCar on the legendary circuit of Spa Francorchamps?! Is this something you have always dreamt of? Then this is your chance!
Also this time they are available in all shapes, sizes and conditions. Our cheerful little Austin friends! Brightwells have become THE experts. Which types are on offer and what else is there to bid on?
The first one is this cheerful 1930 Austin 16/6 Pass & Joyce Magnet Coupe, which was discovered by the previous owner, languishing in a Welsh barn in 1979 in a dilapidated and dismantled state. It is one of just three cars especially bodied by Weymann under instruction from Pass & Joyce, a London distributor for Austin and Sunbeam with showrooms in the West End. Very likely also the sole survivor. It took Mr Jones, the previous owner, (a whooping) 24 years to completely restore the two-tone green Magnet Coupe!
Often when a Concours d'Elegance moves to a different location, one has to see if it is an improvement. Since many years, Concours d'Elegance Het Loo in The Netherlands was well known and was hosted at Palace Het Loo in Apeldoorn.
This year, there was a partial new organization and they moved to the more central Palace Soestdijk and after being present the whole weekend, we are happy with this move. We had a fantastic weekend with many stunning automobiles in a beautiful park-like surrounding. You walk over fields with new surprises after every tree. Especially as it was quite warm, the shadow of the trees was more than welcome.
The quality of the cars was very high. Earlier we have already seen that a lot of Dutch collections have to be taken seriously. And this year again, a stunning collection of cars was shown. The Best of Show award went to a 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A. In the London to Brighton class a 1904 Societe Manufacture D' Armes Landaulette was awarded the first price. Also, the Junior Jury chose the Societe as the winner. The Jury price went to a 1932 Bentley 4.0 litre Vandenplas, and the Italian special coachwork pre-war class was won by a 1932 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gt Berlinetta Aerodinamica MM.
The history of an old car is what often makes the car, but in this case it is both the car and the history that is brilliant! You might have heard about the very early De Dion-Bouton & Trepardoux, this is one of the first cars ever made and only a few are left. One went to the United States and was sold at an auction some years ago. The other one that we know is on display in the fantastic Louwman Museum in The Hague, The Netherlands.
Earlier this year at Vintage Revival Montlhéry, we met Mathieu. He told us the remarkable story of his grandmother and her De Dion-Bouton & Trepardoux. Yes, indeed! His family owned this 1887 steam quadricycle till they sold it to the museum.
