Reinventing European Unity

Paris, Istanbul, Brussels, it's all too much. After yesterday's terror in Brussels we didn't feel much like presenting you the next car story and decided to show you a sample of recent history. On days like this we feel the need to stand together in Europe in order not to fall back to a past with many different countries each with their own borders. That's what the terrorists want and what we should never give them.
The picture is showing a plaque for participants in the 1977 rally Tour d'Europe, a long distance rally that was organised from 1956 to 1992. When you check the countries that were visited during this rally 39 years ago you suddenly realise what changes came over the past decades. Reading round the plaque we read the route:  Belgium printed in the lower right at four o'clock. Then Holland, (West-)Germany, CSSR (the Czech Slovakian Socialist Republic), Austria, Jugoslavia (now divided in several countries), Italy, Spain, Andorra, Maroc, Portugal and France. The old Europe is showing cracks but it is our belief that these misled and frustrated people in fact create the opposite of what their leaders hope for:  unity & strength.
Maybe you have a few minutes to listen to the best line Leonhard Cohen ever wrote :
"There's a crack in everything; that's how the light comes in. "

We cannot put our heads in the sand and pretend that some the UK is not a part of Europe. Also that somehow our passion for old cars can somehow insulate us from the rest of the world.
That is the fact of life and sometimes, sadly, of death.

As a right-minded UK national I am appalled by the terrorism inflicted on our European neighbours. However I prefer my FAVOURITE website to be apolitical in its condemnation, as always I look forward to the next published old car article.
Wishing you all the best in motoring matters.

Thank you for that. Sometimes the old car habit can seem somewhat trite and inward looking but your cover story is spot on and sums up my feelings precisely. As for the idiots in my country (The UK) who want to leave the EU, words fail me. Also share your admiration for Leonard Cohen!

Hello Joris & Laurens,
As an avid reader of your website, I am very impressed with your cover story. Thank you very much. We all went to Paris in February, in spite of the horrors that occurred in November. We should continue to enjoy all of Europe, regardless of whether we live in Europe or not. I give my deepest sympathies to everyone in Brussels. Vive la Belgique! Long Live Europe!
Eldon. Canada.

Let us get real, anyone with any car and gasoline can tour Europe any time they have free time, no need for rally crowds. If interested in filling in cracks, let us put together an old fashioned "GRAND PRIX" tour for the peoples, home builds that pass inspection only need apply. In fact, I have been silently promoting a "Vermont Grand Prix" for quite a few years, lots of open space and silent long roads in Vermont.

It is a shame that you do not have a "like" feature as your post would be liked many times. The West is in a war with the forces of darkness, people who destroy societies, historical artefacts and carry out brutal murder of innocents.
