Fast Rolls for a Speed King

If you are an adventurer with a passion for speed, you're bound to treat yourself to some fast wheels. Hubert Scott-Paine was such an adventurer. His love of speed first took him to the air in 1909. He went on to become director of an aircraft factory in the 1920 and then became interested in powerboats, both building and racing them. One of his boats was Miss Britain II in which he achieved a world record speed for a single-engined boat in excess of 100mph.

No wonder such a man would want to own a special car, a Rolls Royce Phantom II Continental with uprated specs, like a high-compression cylinder head, high-lift camshaft and a high-ratio back axle. Hubert Scott-Paine must have liked the Rolls, because he kept it from 1934 until 1948. After that the Rolls has led gentler life, passing through the hands of several owners. Having been treated by a well-done restoration by Fiennes Engineering, the Phantom II will be auctioned by H&H at Duxford, today October 16.

I have recently moved house, the new house is built on the site of Hubert Scott-Paine's British Powerboat Company in Hythe in Hampshire. The road leading to it is Scttt-Paine Drive and the actual Close where we live is Selman Close, Selman was I think a Director of the Company. He certainly worked with Scott-Paine. The house does not have a garage so I am unable to bid or care for the Rolls-Royce! Michael E Ware
