Vijf geïnspireerde dames, een Model T en het Witte Huis

De eerste indruk van deze vijf jonge vrouwen is die van een trotse, zelfverzekerde groep die het leven vol enthousiasme omarmt. En na wat verder onderzoek blijkt dat dit precies klopt. Hun reis was niet zomaar een roadtrip; het was een avontuur vol bijzondere ontmoetingen en onvergetelijke ervaringen.
Op 24 augustus 1922 verscheen een krantenartikel dat een verhaal vertelde dat vandaag bijna ondenkbaar lijkt:

Five Ohio Girls Made Happy by Courtesies extended by President and Mrs. Harding
Five young women, residents of Columbus, Ohio, who have been touring the east in an automobile, left Washington last night proud and happy, and each one expressed it. “Inspired.”
Tuesday they were shown about the White House and had an interesting chat with Mrs. Harding, who personally pointed out some of the things of interest in the famous old mansion. But today their happiness was made complete, when they met the President in his private office, shook hands with him and received words of greeting from him.
The young visitors are Katherine Bowler, Florence Ames, Elizabeth Marshall, Mary Wiandt, and Charlotte Schuster, and they are all pupils at the Ohio State University. Several weeks ago the girls decided to take a vacation together and in a manner just a little different from the ordinary. They chipped in and bought an inexpensive touring car. So last Friday they left Columbus to be gone until Labor day. They arrived in Washington late Monday and during their brief stay here have been busy practically every moment seeing the sights of the capital. They will leave tonight for Philadelphia and later will go to Atlantic City and New York.

Het is fascinerend om je voor te stellen hoe bijzonder deze ervaring in 1922 moet zijn geweest. Vijf jonge vrouwen die zelfstandig een auto kochten en samen op reis gingen – iets wat destijds allesbehalve vanzelfsprekend was. Hun bezoek aan het Witte Huis en de persoonlijke ontmoeting met de president en de First Lady maakten hun avontuur des te ongelooflijker.
