Ford model A or GAZ 4? Who has heard of this type?

The model A Ford is probably in the top 10 well-known old cars. But have you ever heard of the GAZ 4? Well, we hadn`t till we received photographs of this pick up from Bart Kleyn. He came across the car during the rally he is organizing in Georgia, at the car museum in Tbilisi.

Apparently, there are only 5 of these licensed built cars still around. The Russian car make GAZ is something we have heard of before but this type 4 (or Model A, as we call it) not yet.

We found some information about this pre-war. And even found a photograph of the car in the video game GTA (!).

The GAZ-4 is a truck of the Soviet vehicle manufacturer Gorkowski Awtomobilny Zavod. It was produced in series from 1933 to 1936 and is technically based on the passenger car GAZ-A and the truck GAZ-AA.

In the early 1930s, there was a significant demand for light commercial vehicles in the Soviet Union. Since the only mass-produced suitable vehicle at this time was the passenger car GAZ-A. They developed a light truck on its base, which used the car's chassis. In addition, the driver's cab of the truck GAZ-AA was installed. Since the GAZ-A was a copy of the American Ford Model A, also the GAZ-4 still has significant technical similarities with this vehicle. The size of the loading area was 1.10 × 1.60 meters.

If you know more about the car, please let us know.

As Russian Wikipedia writes, there were more than 10.500 GAZ-4 vehicles produced in 1934-1936.

As a young engineer working for a Danish company in Soviet Union, 1978-81 building dairy plants, I visited the " Polytechnical Museum " in Moscow.

On exibition was a GAZ A Phaeton with the sign: This car was given to Mr Lenin, by the russian people.

This could not be possible since Mr Lenin died allready in 1924, and the car earliest could be from 33/34

Mr Trotsky was also retouched / relegted from many photos at many museums and collections.

History has it own "sanity"

In WW2, such Model A-derivatives built by GAZ were quite a familiar sight at the Eastern front. The attached photo from my collection shows a German soldier (of the rank of a private) with a captured GAZ AA lorry still with kyrillic inscriptions on the windshield. The icon on the left front wing tells us that this car was used by a German maintenance unit.

For more photos of GAZ AA lorries used by the German military refer to Holger Erdmann's excellent website: http://www.kfzderwehrmacht.de/Homepage_english/Motor_Vehicles/Soviet_Union/GAZ/GAZ_AA/gaz_aa.html

The story of the Model A in Russia might seem familiar to us today. Henry Ford struck up a deal with the Russians in the 1930's. Ford bank rolled a factory and production in Russia in return for a fee for every vehicle built. Henry never received a penny. The GAZ you mentioned is just one product of that factory.

Finnish Old car buffs and war historians know about of them. During WWII we got them as spoils of war, but had to return them after the peace. The photo is taken after the battle at Karilahti in June-July 1941:
