De vrijdagse dame gaat dwalen
De auto op deze foto is een Wanderer W52, een prachtig luxemodel met een zescilindermotor van 62 pk. Het zou geen onwaardige rivaal zijn geweest van de BMW 320, maar er zijn er slechts 834 van gebouwd, dus zelfs nieuw was hij een zeldzame verschijning.
Het was een luxueuze, krachtige en exclusieve auto, dus de kans om er op een zonnige dag een stevige rit in te maken met het dak naar beneden zou een glimlach op ieders gezicht moeten toveren. De jonge Fraulein die op het punt staat in te stappen kijkt echter niet blij. Waarom niet?
Het zou ongebruikelijk zijn geweest voor een vrouw om zo'n dure auto te bezitten in de jaren 1930, dus we veronderstellen dat hij waarschijnlijk niet van haar is. Hij is wellicht van haar vader, man of vriend, die hem moest achterlaten als ze 's ochtends naar hun werk vertrokken. De jonge Margarete keek er erg naar uit om er een ritje mee te maken terwijl hij niet keek. Ze zou een ontspannen wandeling maken over de landwegen, een vriend ontmoeten voor de lunch en de Wanderer terugbrengen zoals hij hem had achtergelaten, zonder dat hij het zou merken. Helaas, de uitdrukking op haar gezicht suggereert dat hij vroeg thuis kwam...

Here are pictures of such a car taken at The Circuit des Ardennes in 2011.
Note supercharged 6 cylinder over head valve engine. Not sure whether this is original as a plaque on the firewall says Nouveau Moteur 8.01.2001.

In the 30s, Wanderer was part of the "Auto-Union", like Audi, DKW and Horch. In Zwickau, in the former Audi factory, there is a beautiful museum called "Horch Museum" with a fantastic collection of cars, race cars (Silber Pfeilen) and some DKW motorcycles. I can strongly recommend a visit to this fantastic museum!!

Michael I envy you that you own one of those few survivors.
In the early 90's I could buy a decent example of the W25K and if I remember correctly the price they asked was 250.000 DM.
Not even in my wildest dreams could I collect that kind of money. Oh well....

If they would have spend a big amount of Reichsmark on a Wanderer I would have made the choice for the beautiful W25K built between 1936 and 1939. A real sportscar but again the engine was the archilles heel and the last few W25K even had a 6 cylinder Opel (!) engine. because the kompressor engine of Wanderer had all kind of problems.... Only 258 were built and is now very sought after. *Photo is lend from the Book Deutsche Autos by Werner Oswald

A beautiful shot, yet this Wanderer W52 from 1937/38 was hardly a "splendid luxury model". It was an upper mid-range car, the luxury department in the Auto-Union group was represented by Horch. The W52 wasn't particularly powerful or agile either. Its conventional side-valved engine enabled the same top-speed as the six-cylinder engine of a pretty basic Hanomag "Sturm" or the much smaller six-cylinder of the Fiat 1500 (both featuring over-head valves, by the way). As for the photo situation, this was probably just a publicity shot with a random model.
