Front Wheel Drive Alvis heading for Maastricht

Alvis aficionados will know of course, but to others it may come as a surprise: Alvis really did make front wheel drive cars. In itself FWD was nothing new, but in the UK it was virtually unknown back then. Alvis started experimenting in 1925 with an eight-cylinder racing car. In 1928 the company wanted to produce a car that would be available to the general public. Racing still the best way to advertise they entered two FWD cars at Le Mans, each equipped with a 1.5 four-cylinder. They finished in 6th and 9th place. Success in racing, yes, in sales, no. The FWD was very complicated in terms of maintenance. No problem on a racing circuit, but in the country garage... Merely 155 were made, with only 26 being the FA short chassis two-seater model. One of those 26 will be auctioned by Coys at Maastricht, The Netherlands, during Interclassics & Topmobiel on Saturday, January 18. It's a 1928 FA 1.5 Litre 12/50 with a body made by Cross & Ellis, the coachbuilders that almost caused Alvis' downfall in 1924. This 'Maastricht' Alvis has a well-known racing history. It's lot number 119!

Alvis also made "Racing Cars" after the Front Wheel Drives. However, they never made an Alvis-Monza, nor an engine of 4.6 litres.

Prior to making the front wheel drive racing cars,Alvis made rear wheel drive racing cars. The first racing Alvis contested the 1921 Coupe des Voiturettes in France. Two cars contested the 200 Miles race of that year.
In 1922 Harvey drove a car in the Essex Junior Handicap at Brooklands called "YODOL DODOL DOH" although this may have been the 1921 Coupe des Voiturettes cars from 1921 with wire wheels fitted and a different body.
For 1923 two racing cars were built and two sprint/hillclimb cars. Alvis won the 200 Miles race held at Brooklands.
For 1924 two 2 seater racing cars were built which contested the 200 Miles race at Brooklands as well as other races held there and sprints and hillclimbs. In addition a single seater was built for racing and record breaking.
Of the cars built the body from YODOL DODOL DOH exists on another car,one of the sprint cars from 1923 known as Racing Car Number 1 ,one of the 1924 200 Miles Race cars exists, chassis 2931. In addition in Australia are the mortal remains of the other 1924 200 Miles race car chassis 2929 currently rebuilt with engine /gearbox and rear axle from a standard type Alvis 12/50 of the period
All are rear wheel drive and are racing cars.

I am amused by the 1960's photo of the FWD Alvis with oversize tyres on the back wheels. Perhaps the owner had forgotten which wheels were driven! I had a drive in a s/c FWD Alvis and was surprised how light the steering was although the gearchange did lack precision.
