A Russian Greatgrandfather Mystery (update: Vinot-Deguingand?)

Valery Patrakov: "Hi all! Can anyone help to identify this car? It is a question from a Russian retro forum. One of our forummates tries to find out what was his greatgrandfather's vehicle."

Editor: The car has a large radiator with a brass script near the top. Judging the length of the plate, we would expect to see a long french name... How hard can it be? In our view characteristic is the double bent track rod connecting left and right side. Well, let's leave it to the experts.

How about Vinot-Deguingand? I don't think it's a car, looks more like a small lorry and purpose built, not modified, it looks brand new, very shinny paint and no visible wear. The body is raise by blocks between the front springs and the axle and there's that bracket where the starter crank is, seems as though the engine has been lowered?

I was just waiting for someone to point this out ! I agree and think that it could well be an early Darracq.

Stearns didn't take the Knight sleeve valve license until 1911, so even if Stearns it's probably not a Knight, but as Don Risen says, there are a number of things that don't look Stearns-ish.

I'm having trouble matching it up with a known model, but that white outline on the radiator was a hallmark of the American make Stearns, built at Cleveland, Ohio.

There is a resemblance between this radiator shell and the early Stearns-Knight cars, but there's also differences that make it probably not a Stearns-Knight.
