Jan Roosenburg schrijft: "Ik ben op zoek naar informatie over de Nederlandse coureur Hans Davids uit Rotterdam. Zijn naoorlogse prestaties zijn gedocumenteerd, zowel in de ex Ecurie Ecosse C-type als in de door de fabriek geleverde Aston Martin. Hij was echter ook actief in de vooroorlogse jaren, eerst op een Velocette motorfiets, daarna in een Railton uit 1934 en tenslotte in een Wolseley. Hij reed met succes met de Railton in de Alpine Trial van 1934 zonder punten te verliezen. Hij startte in 1934 in de tien uur van Spa onder nummer 8 (zie foto's van beide evenementen). Hij reed zijn Railton ook in een aantal lokale evenementen. Als iemand informatie heeft wat hij deed voor de kost, waar de Railton werd gekocht, wat ermee gebeurde, enz. zou ik zeer dankbaar zijn."

There is no doubt that he drove in the 1934 Alpine Trial, 10 hrs of Spa and several KNAC rallies in his 1934 Railton. I have an interview he gave in Rotterdam commenting on the Alpine Trial. I do not know what happened to his Railton. Before cars, he raced motorcycles. After WW2 he drove an Aston Martin, winning a race at Silverstone and often driving at Zandvoort. It was the only Aston Martin with factory racing specs in private hands. Your grandfather must have been quite small, Toine Hezemans commented that he asked him to test the steering on his AM and that there was a stack of newspapers on the seat so he could see in front.

My family have the original Peter Crosby artwork and we did a short print run of the image that was in Aug 17th 1934 (p.91) Autocar - racing, pen and ink, rather than the more staid watercolour. I can provide more information - and I think I still have some left. This was perhaps 25 years ago.

Mr Davids was partner in a company called Godfrey & Alvist. This company advised & represented firms to get (militairy) business orders.
You will find these names in 'affaire Koopmann' -something to do with bribing- from the mid-fifties.

According to the dutch magazine 'Carros' 6-2012 Mr Davids seemed to be a wealthy businessman.
Pictures of his Aston Martin DB3S #118 and also some pictures of the man himself.

During my editorship of the Railton Owners Club Bulletin, some 20 years ago! I used the advertisement that appeared in Motor Sport in 1934 celebrating the two Glacier cups won by R.L. Richardson & D.H Davids.
The artwork was by Peter Crosby (the son of Gordon Crosby) who lost his life in the RAF during WW2. The depicted car is that of R.L. Richardson( no 9 ) . A version of that appears in a Railton brochure as a water colour, and still appears from time to time on Greetings Cards.
It is interesting that the advertisment refers to Hans Davids as D.H.Davids.
( I would have added the picture but there does not appear to be an easy way to attach a picture)

I am the owner of Hans David's first racing motorcycle, a 350 Norton CJ supplied to Hans via Piet van Wjingarden in 1929.
