The Hautier electric car Mystery

The Russian car historian Vasily Shiska is struggling with the above issue for a long time already and is asking your help (Vasily published in russian about Leon-Bollée and about Darracq):

"At the 1899 Paris motor show (editor: i.e. "Le Salon de l'Automobile du Cycle et des Sports"), captain Draullette presented his electric cab. In the press appeared at least 10 articles in 1899, and a patent about an electric Draullette, but there is no mention of the company Hautier. The only mention of it is in the subscript made with a typewriter in a photo album of Mr. Jules Beau. The photo shows a slightly different coachwork compared with  these sketches. In documents about the Hautier company not any electric car is mentioned. Perhaps the car whown above was specially comissioned by Hautier,  or is Jules Beau wrong?"

I always hesitate to mention any of the research I have done because you have probably seen it previously... but I do find references to the model in the photo in the publication "Automobiles Electriques" by Gaston Sencier, published in 1901.

Good luck unravelling the mystery. I have followed you in this story for several years. The Draulette taxi is beautifully done for those days, or any age!

In June 1901 Grand Duke Kiril Wladimirowist Romanov visited Finland. He rode on electric automobile from St. Petersburg via Viipuri, Hamina to Porvoo and visited Haikko estate. This journey was reported in many Finnish newspapers but only one told that the car was powered by electricity. Could the automobile used by Kiril be of French make? I enclose one article (23.06.1901 Wiipuri no 144 s. 2) telling about this trip.

TheJuly 6, 1899 edition of La Locomotion Automobile has a nearly full-page photo of a Draulette l'Autocab. The coachwork is very similar to this but it is designed as a hansom cab. The articles are in French and I have only a little high school French to work with, so I can't offer any help outside of directing you to the magazine.

I attached the poor quality photo below.

1. What kind of car the illustration in La France Automobile? As in "Chauffeur" or as known photograph Hautier?
2. All existing photos from magazines 1899-1900 shows a car as in "chauffeur" and only in the book of 1901 picture Draullette as famous photograph Hautier
3. Patent English. French could apply earlier.
4. "The Automobile magazine" American Journal in March 1900 pages 591-595 publish all pictures of the patent. Amazing efficiency!
5. Ford was engaged in electric cars?

This may help the mystery.
In "1899" Henry Ford successfully organized his FIRST company, the DETROIT AUTOMOBILE COMPANY, in 1900 producing 20 "delivery vans" before the company bankrupted in 1901.
These purpose built vans seem to coordinate with the aspirations of Captain Draullette?

This is what I was thinking too. Besides the date of the brevet is July 1900, more or less coinciding with the date of the article in La France Automobile.

Many thanks to all for your help!
1. The earliest publication in the journal "chauffeur" 07/25/1899. Immediately after the show. It is presented here.
2. Jules Beau seems wrong. Baudry de Saunyer not checked the information.
3. Magazine "La Locomotion Automobile" publication placed on Darracq-Bolle in April 1900 after 9 months after the launch in July 1899. Therefore, we see that the logs sometimes late.

There 2 versions Draullette bodies.
You can compare the patent and the famous photograph Hautier. There is a picture of the 1901 book of the car signed Draullette (it cut editor
PreWarCar).
The second option is presented in a photo from a magazine Chauffeur. For example differences in the front step and fenders over the wheels.

About the book "Histoire de la locomotion terrestre" ed.l'Illustration (edition 1936) the credit of the picture is for "J. Beau, archives photographiques du Touring-Club de France).
The fund of pictures of Jules beau is accessible on gallica.bnf.fr (http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b8433328x/f29.item). On this original it's possible to see that the legend (now "Voiture electrique Hautier") is glued on something different. It's easy to imagin that there is an error on this original, reported "like that" in the book l'Illustration ?

An almost exact copy of the Hautier photo by Jules Beau, but from a slightly different angle, appeared in La France Automobile of July 14, 1900. It is described however as the new electric autocab by captain Draullette. No mention of Hautier. Why is it called 'la nouvelle autocab' if it had already been presented in 1899 (or even 1897)? Besides I know that Jules Beau wasn't always correctt in his photo descriptions and I also don't know when he put together all of his sample albums. So I'm interested in the earliest known publication of the photo. The second photo in the article by Malcolm Jeal complicates the whole affair, because I have never seen that one before and there seems to be no reference to its source.

This is an interesting question and it reminded me of an article by Malcolm Jeal on hansom cabs in issue 83 (Winter 2015-2016) of the SAHB Times, the excellent journal of the Society of Automotive Historians in Britain. On page 11 one finds the Draulette and the Hautier hansom next to each other and it is clear that they look very much the same but als that there are several differences.
I have the impression that Hautier never seriously attempted to enter the market of electric cars. They were quite succeful with petrol cars. Of the Draulette nothing has been heard after the captain showed his car in the automotive press (both in 1897 and 1899).

Thank you very much for your answers! Unfortunately not yet known any publication 19 or early 20th century on an electric Hautier. But we know a minimum 10 publications about the electric car Draulette. Absolutely the first mention of an electric Hautier found only in 1936.
PS The book is about the first 11 models Alexander Darracq available in French. Its description can be seen on PreWarCar see new books.

For over 200 years the Paris Salon had been the center of World Art, supplemented by a few additions within the last half of the 19th Century, notably by the Impressionists. I would suspect that pure talent was tempered by symbolic content.
The automobile was to soon become the new art form, Captain Draullette achieved his purpose, merely by exhibiting at the (new)SALON.
