Have we spotted the new MGB?

Organizer Bart Kleyn of the Via Flaminia Pre-War Rally faces a slight problem. One of the participants of this rally that will start in about three weeks has had a spot of bad luck en blew the engine of his MG J2. Now he wants to bring his other car, an ultra-modern MGB, to the rally instead of the J2. As the MGB is clearly no pre-war automobile, Bart has a problem. What should he do? Allow the MGB amongst the other participants with their pre-war cars? Or should he be strict and say no! What do you think? Help Bart solve his dilemma and tell us what he should do...

Think outside the box!
Find him another participant with a four-seater car that is willing to take him.
If he is so nice, that should not be difficult. And I am sure there are many bigger cars, Alvis 25, Lancia Lambda or vintage Bentleys that will carry him on the back seat with no pain. This will be a nice experience for him and the other participants. He could even try out many different cars, who knows?

Once more I know why I don't like to participate in such events. But three weeks should be enough to repair an engine, if one knows what he is doing.

saludos,
Oliver

I do agree with C. Draper (comment #14)in this matter: welcome them to the rally and let them drive it, without any rallysigns and numbers and do not allow them to compete.

All pre- war car owners know that the greatest challenge is keeping them on the road. In this case there is 3 weeks available, and J2's are not so rare that parts cannot usually be found. If the cylinder block is sound, something may yet be done. If nothing can be done, then it's just bad luck. A few years ago my old Talbot lost a big end on the way to the National STD Rally. I got to the rally venue anyway in my 'everyday' car- but I did not expect to 'take part', other than to socialize. As others have said, it is dangerous to set precedents.

The more the merrier ! Let him go along.
But outside of competition - or possibly in competition only in the most powerful class - if that is reasonable for the other regular competitors in that class.
Best would be of course if he or you can find him an suitable prewar alternative.

Do like I did in the early 80's: buy a cheap but solide sidevalve Ford Prefect or Popular or Y-engine and remove the original J2-engine. With this english alternative his car will fly at 100 km/h and will bring them through Europe without any hick-ups. The only problem is that you can't sit with other MG-drivers during the gala-diner because your car isn't original, but who cares ;-)

I agree with Peter Ransom on this one. Let them bring the MG-B but let them drive without Rally Signage and without any eligibility. You shouldn't make is too attractive for people to bring their 'other' car but I'm sure that in this case no-one is more disappointed than the contestant itself. A prewar rally is not just about the cars, it's all about the drive!

Further to my comment, sell the MGB and use the money to rebuild the J2!! You still have 3 weeks, it can be done!

I realize the problem, but on the other hand must I refuse nice participants just because they have a stroke of bad luck ?

CAN ANYBODY LEND (RENT THEM) A DECENT CAR ?

what does that means: he blew up his engine. Is the headgasket gone or does he need a full engine renovation and isn't there nobody with a capable engine on the shelf so it can be fixed in three weeks?? They can build a T-ford in less than 4 minutes http://www.youtube.com/watch v=wipu_3waWbc so shoulder to shoulder and work on that car.

Make him welcome at the event - but do not allow him to compete. I assume the Rally is more social than competitive - if purely competitive he should not attend.

I suggest the MG J2 driver was a serious contender and should be allowed on but give him a marshal like function in the tour.

No, no no, a thousand times no! Such an event will be ruined if you once relax the rules, it will be inundated with these dreadful post-war "pastiches`' of a sports car. ( And I should know, I am embarrassed to admit I have a TD as well as "proper" pre-war cars!!) Next it will be kit-cars. Plenty of events for modern MGB's TR4's and Spitfires, there's no need whatsoever to let them into an event for totally different Pre-War cars.

Rules is Rules and if its prewar then its prewar with no exceptions this would start the ball rolling for others 'well last year you let that MGB compete' so the competitor will have to borrow a car or pass on his entry

As this is an event for prewar cars it would be best for the interests of all concerned to insist on a strict date code for participants. Speaking from bitter experience, once you make an exception for one the question will arise again and you will be obliged to allow inappropriate cars to enter in the future.

I think he should refuse a post-war car. He can allow the unlucky participant to come with his everyday car.
I do partcipate to an event for pre-warcars in France. Some years ago they accepted 2 post-wars, last year more than 30% came with post-wars... all unlucky ?????

Let him start!
The intention was to start in the J2.
And no one is more disappointed that the J can't come than the owner.
Don't make his day worse by kicking him out of the run!

This sort of thing happens all the time. The simple solution is to let him bring the MGB but not display any Rally signage. If it's a competitive event he would not be eligible for any awards. The public will be none the wiser and he'll have a good time - just not in the J2.

You only have to look at the excellent video of last years event on the Via Flaminia website to see how wrong it would be to let an MGB into this 'pre war' rally!
I am sorry- no from me !

NO ! it's a rally for Pre-war cars !
I suppose if he takes the engine out of the MGB and makes a J2 upgrade, then there may be some claim, but otherwise NO !

Yes, but for social reasons only. Allow the MGB to accompany the rally but cannot win any prizes and not listed in the results except possibly for a Hard Luck award.
Possibly ask the participant to assist in running the event. An extra hand is always welcome. I wouldn't turn him away.

Let him participate in the MGB but not be eligible for any awards. The The poor guy has suffered a catastrophic and expensive loss to his pre war pride and joy, has presumably been looking forward to the event and has probably made travel and vacation arrangements. Don't punish him further.
