Trash or Treasure? What's hiding behind these doors?
No Friday girl today, but not less fascinating. Regular visitor 'Pete'(*) sends this photo of the double garage he rented out more than twenty years ago to a gentlemen who passed away recently. "The garages are padlocked, and haven't been used over 20 years, when I rented it to a man, who is no longer with us. I do remember, he mentioned that he stored two old cars in the garage." Now Pete wants to have the location cleaned out and is prepared to give away whatever is inside, provided that you will clean out the full 10 x 11 meter area (garages & grounds). Wow, that's something to get your imagination take off! Is it a late series Austin Seven and Beetle? Or possibly a forgotten SSK and Alfa 8C ? Or just a pile of rusty bits or even worse. Pete never had a peek inside, so it will be an total surprise - or sheer disappointment - to see what's inside. Now in order to prevent riots of treasure hunters we have decided to gather your e-mails and hand them over to Pete for him to decide to what will happen further. For your information the garages are in an urban area in the southern part of the UK. Pete will be available to visit the location between 14 and the 28th of May. The content of these garages is, indeed, the property of the family of the deceased (or his chosen beneficiaries). But the owner of the garages could have a claim from the estate for rent owed. If there is something of value inside, and the 'winner' wants to claim it, and the beneficiaries cannot be traced, then he could put a notice in the local press (with advice from a solicitor)and legitimately become the owner.

HMM, this looks familiar, I think down the road from a pals place in the SE U.K. As I remember, there were two old pedal cars in there with no wheels, a rusty pram and a kids mid 50's pedal trike, with no seat................too bad it's not April the first.....Cheerio all! Keith

What makes me suspect that even if the doors have not been opened and no one has been inside that a wise owner would use a fiber optic cable to completely inspect for treasures and sell as advertised if nothing found. Just human nature!

Those garages look just the sort of place you'd choose for your Duesenburg and 8 litre Bentley, but I'm not sure you could become the rightful owner. Who has the documentation for those cars? I may be wrong, but I'd have thought they'd be the legal property of the late owners heirs/family, not the proprietor of the garages.
