Hold on to your hat!

How she does it we don’t know, but can you image driving a Knox racing car wearing a hat like that? It’s definitely not a posed photo because her coat is covered in mud, just like the car (click main photo to check!). Well, maybe Joan Newton Cuneo -the lady behind the wheel- didn’t really race the Knox at the time of the photo, but she certainly did her bit. Dr. Elsa Nystrom, Professor of History at Kennesaw State University, has researched her life as the first successful female auto racer in the United States, see Read More for the story…

Yes, she is driving her Knox "Giant" in this picture, she was trying it out on the Shell Road in New Orleans before the Mardi Gras races. She did drive the Hummer on the Long Island Motor Parkway a few years later. In the Knox with her Louis Disbrow and her son Antonio. The hat came off and the goggles went on when she put the pedal to the metal.

The photo in the link above labeled "in a Pope Hummer" is actually another picture of Mrs. Cuneo in her Knox. You can clearly see the "Knox" logo on the radiator.

A Pope Hummer is shown in the link below.

She must have been a bit special to have done what she did, in spite of the opposition.
