How to get to work in winter....

The Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum is a living museum. Not only static exposure but also showing off machinery in action.  They sent in some great examples for the season what we really like. In our part of the world, winter is yet to come, but in the country of Santa's deer the snow is probably knee-deep already.

The first car shown is a 1917 Ford Model T Snow Flyer with tracks and skis, which as far as we know was an aftermarket option. The next one is a Fordson Snow Tractor that currently is under restoration by the crew at the museum. Along with the great collection of pre-war cars ,the Fountanhead is  also home to one of the country's finest collections of vintage clothing. Shown are some winter clothes on display.

The model T engine was surprisingly PEPPY at times, which may be contributable to use of TUNGSTEN alloyed block. Performed much better in the cold than in the warm

Virgil White, a West Ossipee, New Hampshire, Ford dealer, is credited with creating the first example of what we now call a "snowmobile," by converting a Model T Ford in this fashion in 1913. He sold both conversion kits and complete vehicles. He later sold his interests and patents to the Farm Specialty Manufacturing Company in New Holstein, Wisconsin, which marketed them as "Snow Flyers" like this one.

What an amazing machine? Although I can envisage a very wide turning circle, and pronounced understeer, it's an ingenious solution for such driving conditions.

Looks like the lady in the rear passenger seat does not trust it and wants to jump out
