Junk from Kindergarten?

Can you imagine finding a racing car in the garden of an orphanage? Sounds incredible, doesn’t it? Yet this is what happened to this Lucenti Special when at the end of its active racing life -just before WW II- it was donated to a children’s home. After some 10 years of 'TLC' by the playing kids the remains were  discovered by a collector who recognized it for what it was: an Indy car which had been entered in the so-called “Junk Formula”. A formula introduced in the 1930s for cars in which mostly production parts were used. The collector kept the Lucenti Special for 55 years, but in 2006 it was completely restored by a new owner (click main picture). The Lucenti Special is now up for sale at RM’s Arizona Auction on January 21. Wouldn't it be great to present this superfast piece of historical 'junk'  at the coming Indy 500 centennial celebrations!
