Let's keep the train rolling

The PreWarCar.com team is working hard every day to keep our websites running and to show you the most amazing and interesting photographs. As we cannot do this alone, we are very happy with fellow car enthusiast sending in their stories and photographs.

For example Reg Harris, who shared quite some old stories from Queensland, Australia. This time we received a photograph of a 1917c Studebaker which had been converted to run on train lines on Queensland’s 3ft-6in narrow gauge lines. At the time, it was the Railway Commissioner’s inspection car and is shown at a country railway station with several dignitaries. When Reg commenced working with the Queensland Railway Department in 1948 it had been downgraded to a Divisional Manager’s inspection vehicle. He remembered working on it a couple of times before it was recalled and scrapped.

Thank you, Reg for sharing this story with us.

Do you also have (old) photographs, a funny story which involves a pre-war, or do you want to come up with a quiz? Please send your input to [email protected].

Sorry Politi for not seeing your comment earlier. Re your question "Was the narrow gauge used over the less than direct routes?" When the various states of Australia started to build their railway systems during the 19th century each state went its own way with the result that there are three gauges within Australia - 5ft 3 in. Standard 4ft 8 1/2 inch and 3ft. 6in. Queensland elected to build on the 3ft 6in track throughout the State so there are several thousand kilometres of such track still to-day. In fact all Queensland coal haulage lines are of this gauge carrying upward of 100,000,000 tonnes annually. It is only within the last 50 years that all State capitals were linked by Standard guage.
