Long-distance Darracq

The scene is an Alpine pass in August, 1951. As the sun falls in the sky, suddenly two glowing orbs appear, lighting up the snow-capped peaks. The very next thing, a vast, black Vintage motor car comes thundering out of the haze, the driver a young Englishman intent on adventure. The car he’s chosen to take on this ambitious grand tour is no less than a 1925 Darracq 15/40 DS dual-cowl torpédo. Well, what else?

The owner of this imposing French touring car probably didn’t quite realise its full significance at the time, beyond the fact that it was a strikingly good-looking, powerful and unusual means of transport. However, it happened that this particular Darracq, with its boat-tailed torpédo body, has always been an extremely rare car, not just in England but in Europe, too, and this example is now understood to be the sole survivor. It’s a pity, of course, because a more handsome touring body is difficult to conceive, especially with the hood raised.

Perhaps it’s just as well, because if our bold tourist had had any qualms about using such a rare car, it may never have had such wonderful adventures as it did. Zack Stiling relates the eventful life of a well-travelled, unrestored and unique survivor in the November issue of The Automobile, on sale now.
