This week’s PreWarCar of the Week is a 1928 Sunbeam 20HP Rally Saloon. Also known as 'Magnificent Monte'.
The first 20 hp Sunbeam was introduced in 1927. They were sold from £750 upwards, which is nowadays unthinkable. These early models were powered by 2,916cc six-cylinder engines, but after three years followed up by 3.3-litre models with an output of 23.8 hp.
The wonderful Sunbeam we see here was first registered on the 31st of December 1928. It was built by the same team that put together Sir Donald Campbell’s Sunbeam Bluebird.
Sunbeam’s own Director Mr Leo Cozens, the owner of UK 6219, entered for the Monte Carlo Rally in January 1929. Points were earned with a crew of three persons. Existing of driver and sales manager of Sunbeam Leo Cozens, Charles Joyce of Pass and Joyce Ltd, Sunbeam distributors in London, and Humfrey Symons, sports editor of 'The Motor'. They completed the rally and became creditable fifteenth with 'Magnificent Monte'. Many original photographs that were taken during the rally, even as various plaques and other memorabilia come with the car.
The Sunbeam looks exactly like it did back in 1929 and is in an excellent condition. Both the interior and the exterior. As can be seen in the photographs. Wouldn`t it be fantastic to use this car for various (international) rallies? All instruments are already present, so the only thing you need is either a driver or a navigator! Depending on your own capacities. The car will certainly not stop you!
On the 28th of November 2018, this impressive 1928 Sunbeam will be sold at auction (estimated between £125,000 and £135,000). Find out more about this Rally Saloon in the online Marketplace.
