The Hartmann Maserati Mystery. (update: 8 CM in Hungarian colurs)

George Nica from Romania recently found photos of Ladislau (László) Hartmann, GP driver form Romania. He is in Sunday clothing at the wheel of a Maserati 8 cylinder. Most probably the same 8CM 3.0 litre S-8 that he campaigned that year on various circuits (click and scroll down at Leif Snellman's pages). The photo was taken on October 5, 1935 a week after the Czech GP of Brno. However on the hillclimb pages by Hans Etzrodt one can find that Hartman won the hillclimb of Feleac on October 6, 1935 not with a 8CM yet with a Maserasti 6C-34. So what's the story? Did Hartmann bring two Masers? Or is the the 8C description of the car shown not correct? Who can tell which of the two cars is depicted here? The Maserati 8 or 6 ?  Maybe you also can identify the second car below.  George Nica took the trouble making a photo of the exact location as it is today. Very little has changed. (see Read More for full notes by George Nica)

I'd love to get in touch with George Nica.
It is 75 years since Laszlo Hartmann died in a racing accident. A tribute to him has been published in English:

Glad you liked my photos on Hartmann :)

The entry in the Feleac result list 1935 might be wrong. I far as I know, Maserati has provided a model 6C-34 to Hartmann only in mid-season of 1937 and that particular car given was previously driven by Nuvolari.

The story of László Hartmann and his various Maseratis is very complicated! It is only now that more photographs are appearing that the real history has emerged.

There's a long discussion of him at the Autosport Nostalgia Forum, but the key post is by the Hungarian motoring historian Pal Negyesi, which shows Hartmann in what must be the same car, taken at the Dobogókő Hillclimb earlier in 1935. It is indeed an 8CM, not a 6C-34.

There is also some information about the history of the Feleac Hillclimb:
