MG J2 reborn

As popular today with sporting motorists as it has ever been, the simple construction and rewarding driving experience of the MG J2 makes it a natural choice for a prewar restoration. With a committed MG restorer involved, one could be forgiven for thinking that any J2 might be resurrected with only a few easy weekends’ work but, in reality, we all know that life has an annoying habit of getting in the way.

This 1932 J2 was acquired by a prominent marque enthusiast in 1992 in quite a sorry state. The chassis, axles, carburetters and gearbox were there, but the body was rotten and the engine, hood, side screens and seats were absent. Dismantled a long time previously, our restorer soon discovered that many of the parts that ought to have fitted the J2 had actually become mixed up with parts from the vendor’s similarly dismantled M-type, so the restoration was compounded further.

Now, however, after 27 years, perseverance has paid off and the J2 is motoring again. Michael Ware reveals how it got Back on the Road in the November issue of The Automobile, on sale now.
