Mighty Monza

Few cars are able to claim an almost unbroken history of competition use, but this 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza, chassis 2211130, is one that can, and it’s all the more impressive for its string of important owners.

New to Noel Rees, it was the first Monza imported to England and it was driven for him, resplendent in Italian rosso corsa, by the Hon Brian Lewis. Naturally, many visits to Brooklands were be on the cards and in 1934 it was acquired by no less than John Cobb, who stripped it back to bare aluminium to match his Napier-Railton. Prior to the war, the car would change hands again to the ill-fated young Brazilian Luís Fontes, spend two years being road-raced by the enthusiastic Antony Powys-Lybbe and end up with Fay Taylour.

A further string of competitive owners would follow, until being discovered for sale by Patrick Lindsay, who would campaign it with his characteristic vigour, and in whose ownership it was reunited with the Napier-Railton.

Now resplendent in the British Racing Green it wore for the 1933 Nice Grand Prix, 2211130 still gets driven far and wide. A chance sighting of the car was the source of Mick Walsh’s boyhood dreams.
