Much older than you might think

In recent times it has been the norm to describe a collection of motoring collectables or accessories as “Automobilia”. I never thought to find out where the word came from, or when it was first used, it just seemed right. Wikipedia says, “it is a portmanteau of the words automobile and memorabilia….” My friend Richard sent me an advertisement from Motoring Illustrated issue June 30th, 1906 for a firm in Oxford Street called “Automobilia Ltd – the great motor accessories Mart.” The clothing and accessories described in their ad would all be very collectable today and would certainly fit our interpretation of automobilia.
