New kid on the block

Ray Barrett tells us about his ‘latest’ hobby: “I am a new convert to pre-war cars and this is my recently purchased Austin 7 box saloon. The previous owner just used it for local shows and did less than 100 miles per year, I like to use cars as they were meant to be and have already done over 300 miles in the 6 weeks I have had her. I haven’t got many photos yet as we haven’t had the car long. I’m 55 years old, married with grown up children, and live in rural Lincolnshire, in the UK. I’ve had a lifelong interest in all types of old vehicles (I’ve also got a 1950 Ferguson T20 tractor which I’ve owned for 13 years), and fortunately my wife is generally sympathetic to my interests!
Up until recently I had a 1972 MG Midget, which I owned for about 3 years and used regularly all year round. I bought it partly for sentimental reasons because when I first met my future wife in the 70’s her mother had one that she used to let me drive. However I found I was starting to get bored with it as it felt too modern.
My interest in Pre-War cars started

Perhaps I have a slightly different view about using cars nearly 80 years old. I spent a lot of money restoring my Talbot when I first had it nine years ago, but cannot afford to do that again. I see myself as a custodian. I drive it most weeks, but am careful about the weather (both the very hot and wet varieties are damaging) and try to avoid motorways. Although I do a few long runs I believe in respecting her age and am gentle with her. These cars were not designed for modern conditions and should be driven with confidence tempered by a little trepidation--thats just my view. I become very attached to mine, having owned just three 1930's cars over a 45 year period.

I'm been amazed by the journeys that some people make in their Austin 7s. but England to Australia must beat them all. That's certainly given me the inspiration to get a few miles under my belt!

When Graham Ranking writes "I have had more fun in Austin 7s than any other car." then don't underestimate those words. He has a fine taste in motor cars.
Modesty made hime forget to tell you of his Austin 7 saloon trip from England to Australia - the story of which he published in VAT 69.

Well done---you have just made one of the best decisions of your life---you will never regret it. I have had more fun in Austin 7s than any other car. They represent the best motoring value on the planet by a long way. Enjoy !
