A loaded Studebaker Dictator

Frank Mitchel is a long time owner (36 years!) of this Studebaker Dictator 6A. Since the car is in fine fetlle he has specialised his hobby in dfinding the right accesoires....
"I purchased the car with 31,472 original miles and have carefully maintained it since completing the major work in 1980. I enjoy adding accessories to the car and this past year have added original Philco Under the Running Board Radio Antenna, Center Grill Guard  and an aftermarket Hull Compass [only GPS available in 1937]. The car is over 95%  original ..the paint on the dash has only been polished....The Trunk Rack is an original Studebaker Accessory and the Metal Accessory Trunk is made by the same company that made the Trunk Rack from the sales literature I have collected . My next project is to add a Startix - automatic restart [ if car is stalled] available from Studebaker as a Dealer Option in 1937." Who can help Frank locating a usable Startix?

Frank, I have been looking for the formula for Lt. Everglade Green. We have searched everywhere for it. Any ideas? I have the original formula but my ppg or DuPont rep can't seem to match it.

Thanks for all your kind comments. I do have a restored Startix Unit ready for my car and have tested it. The unit senses the current from the generator when the engine is running and if the engine stalls will automatically restart it. You have to remember to quickly push down the clutch quickly as there is no interlock. This was only available as a dealer installed option in 1937 as interest in the unit was decreasing. Studebaker used a Backfire Control Switch in the circuit to prevent the Startix Unit from trying to restart the engine if a backfire occured at the same time. I was lucky to find a NOS Switch. I am currently having a Wiring Harness made so I can complete the installation over the winter. The Startix [Lucas] Units used in several British makes were made or supplied under licence from Bendix [Eclipse Mfg Co] located in Elmira, New York. They were used on Cord, Packard; Pierce Arrow; Studebaker and others from 1932 until about 1937. After 1937 interest dropped rapidly and they were not installed in cars after 1938-39. They were subsequently used on WWll Chrysler Air Raid Sirens. People who own cars with them installed either like them [they work perfectly] or hate them [they work intermittently]. I have been intrigued by this component that I consider one of the early "electronic" devices.

Nice restoration, Frank. I do have an extra STARTIX Automatic Starting device. The details: Manufactured in England under Bendix license; model SX 6; type L; Number 03447; 12 Volts; and Joseph Lucas. I would part with it.

I have acar here using the Startix system. nothing to do with clutch, if you turn the key to the right the start button is operative, turn key to the left engine will crank automatically until engine starts, if you stall engine will crank automatically. used on Daimler, Hillman, Standard & others. The one I have works perfectly.

Well done Frank, it is nice to see a good original car maintained as such.
I was interested in your search for a "Startix" self start system for your car as I was unaware that such devices were ever fitted to American vehicles. Although I have owned many old cars over the years I only ever seen about three of these on various British built machines. The theory of operation is simple, in that if the car is stalled in traffic it can be quickly restarted by putting the clutch pedal down to the floor. Once the engine has started, vacuum from the inlet manifold tells the control box to disconnect the electrical contacts from the clutch pedal. It sounds simple but I have yet to see one that still works! Good luck in your search!

Congratulations, Frank. The car is a credit to you.Glad to see another long-term owner. It is 40 years this week since I purchased my sad @ sorry 1933 Citroen Rosalie Tourer, but have enjoyed the effort of restoration over 8 years and using it for last 32 years.
